”Infrastructure Engineering and Justice: working in the water-energy-food nexus”
Dr Elisabeth Shrimpton, Cranfield University
Dr Shrimpton will discuss her work in research as an infrastructure engineer working within the water-energy-food nexus. She discusses how social, environmental and justice considerations form a fundamental part of her work and guide both how the ‘problem’ is defined and the ‘solution options’ generated. She calls for an interdisciplinary mindset within engineering infrastructure and illustrates her approach with experiences working with drought prone small-scale farmers in Morocco, South Africa and Turkey, along with experiences researching new hydrogen production technologies and their potential impacts on indigenous communities in the US and Australia.
Dr Shrimpton has a PhD in civil engineering from the University of Birmingham. Prior to this she was a senior Partner in large national law firm and has over 20 years of legal experience. She works at the interface of new net zero infrastructure interventions and the social, environmental and governance systems that surround them. She has a particular interest in the integration of justice considerations within engineering research and teaching.
