In September 2023 a pivotal transatlantic two-day workshop explored the state of the art in urban underground infrastructure research. A landmark report describes the workshop’s outcomes and makes suggestions for next steps alongside providing the background that led to the event, details of the event itself and its management.

The workshop was funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the US National Science Foundation (NSF). Facilitated and delivered by UKCRIC in the UK and by George Mason University in the US, the workshop brought together select, internationally-leading infrastructure scholars and experts to consider the big questions, identify major gaps in knowledge and technology, and define opportunities for transformation in urban underground infrastructure. The US and UK workshops were run concurrently, with a structure designed to enable some independent working in the host locations and online parallel sessions bringing both groups together for joint discussion.

"Without a paradigm shift in how infrastructure systems are engineered, constructed, and operated, significant cost overruns are likely to continue and the gap between the services these systems are designed to deliver and the population’s requirements will continue to widen. "
