UKCRIC welcomes new members
UKCRIC is delighted to welcome 17 new members to its network of higher education institutions committed to connecting research with policy and practice in infrastructure and urban systems.
UKCRIC is a national network of leading universities and advanced research facilities dedicated to transforming the way we plan, design, deliver, and operate infrastructure and urban systems.
This expansion follows a decision by UKCRIC’s Executive Board to make membership free and to focus on representing UK universities with capabilities in infrastructure and urban systems. This move underpins UKCRIC’s mission to link academia with government, industry, and end users to address challenges in resilient, sustainable, and equitable urban systems.
UKCRIC’s Convenor Professor William Power said, “With 25 institutional members and a community of more than 700 individuals, UKCRIC is better poised and ready to respond to emerging challenges and research calls, by pushing boundaries, by raising our profile and by influencing practice, policy and research”.
Members benefit from exclusive access to network activity (such as framework agreements and skills & training opportunities), collaborations (including with government and higher TRL), and Executive Board representation.
“We are keen to join the UKCRIC Collaboratorium to contribute our expertise and strengthen research capabilities across the community through collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches that enhance the sustainability and resilience of UK infrastructure. We have extensive expertise in industry-engaged research, particularly in underground space utilisation and sustainable construction methodologies. City St George's hosts a unique large-scale shear box facility for testing construction materials and a world-leading geotechnical centrifuge facility for modelling construction processes. We see significant opportunities to develop new research collaborations, exchange ideas with peers, and gain perspectives that advance infrastructure research and innovation.”
Dr Sam Divall, Department of Engineering, City St George’s, University of London
“As a member of the UKCRIC Executive Board representing the University of Reading, I look forward to strengthening connections between UKCRIC and University of Reading's research community working across sustainability, climate resilience, the built environment, and systems and futures thinking. By creating opportunities for collaboration between our research groups, hubs and the wider UKCRIC network, I hope to support the generation of interdisciplinary knowledge that can inform policy and practice. Through these partnerships, I seek to advance systems-based approaches to infrastructure planning and governance, supporting better responses to climate change and societal challenges.”
Professor Irem Dikmen, School of the Built Environment, University of Reading
"Exeter’s membership of UKCRIC provides an exciting opportunity to connect our strengths in AI and environmental intelligence with a leading national network working towards more sustainable and resilient infrastructure and communities. I am particularly interested in machine learning to understand, forecast and mitigate risks in infrastructure systems, particularly through spatio-temporal modelling, uncertainty-aware prediction and AI-supported decision-making. I hope to bring this computational perspective to UKCRIC, while building collaborations that combine AI with infrastructure expertise, facilities and real-world data. For Exeter, this offers opportunities to develop interdisciplinary research, funding and impact with academic, industry and policy partners across the UKCRIC network.”
Dr Jawad Fayaz, Department of Computer Science, University of Exeter
