Congratulations to Professor Liz Varga, Principal Investigator, UKCRIC Coordination Node (UCL) and Director of UKCRIC Limited, who has been granted a sabbatical by UCL for the academic year Sep 25-Aug 26 to work on her book “Digitalisation for Infrastructure Resilience”. The book will take a complex systems approach for the use of digitalization in infrastructure systems resilience.
Unlike mainstream texts which take a static and sectoral/modal perspective on infrastructure, this book will highlight the value of systems thinking to represent dynamic and co-evolving infrastructure systems and their emergent properties which affect infrastructure’s ability to absorb and adapt in the face of hazards and threats. Digitalization enablers of resilience will be systemically described, including the use of data, algorithms, models, and visualisations.
In addition to writing the book, Liz will also be promoting the new ISO standard for infrastructure resilience ISO22372 which she has led and builds on her United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) work. ISO22372 will be published by October 2025. As a part of this work Liz will also create an indexed, searchable on-line resource with links to open data sets, models, algorithms which provide global examples of data and methods useful for knowing and improving infrastructure resilience.
The outputs from Liz’s sabbatical will be shared with the UKCRIC Network.
