Anastasios Sextos

Professor of Earthquake Engineering (University of Bristol)

Anastasios Sextos (www.asextos.net) is a Professor of Earthquake Engineering at the University of Bristol, UK which he joined in 2015 after serving for 12 years at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki as a Lecturer, (tenure-track and tenured) Assistant Professor and Associate Professor. He is currently the founding Director of the new MSc Programme in Earthquake Engineering and Infrastructure Resilience at the University of Bristol, UK and the Academic co-Lead for the Soil-Foundation-Structure Interaction Facility of the UK Collaboratorium for Research on Infrastructure and Cities in Bristol.

Anastasios obtained a 5-y diploma in Civil Engineering (1997, AUTh) graduating as the first student in his class, an MSc with distinction in Earthquake Engineering by Imperial College London (1998) and a Ph.D. in Multiple Support Seismic Excitation of Bridges (AUTh, 2001) accomplished in the minimum nominal time with distinction.

During 2011-20 he was awarded and managed as Lead PI and PI, 20 Grants worth approximately £5.47million (6.6m), funded by EU, UK, Greece, Germany and China. He is currently the coordinator (Lead PI) of a large EU/H2020 consortium on Seismic Risk of Natural Gas Pipeline Networks and the holder of the EPSRC-Global Challenges £1.6m (1.9m) grant on the Seismic Safety and Resilience of Schools in Nepal.

Anastasios has an extensive record of service to the earthquake engineering community. He is a member of the European Project Team for the Evolution of Structural Eurocodes (SC8.T6 for EN1998/Eurocode 8, PT6 for bridges), the co-Chair of the European Association for Earthquake Engineering Work Group 11 for bridges, the elected President of the Hellenic Society of Earthquake Engineering (2017-2019 and 2019-2021), a member of the ASCE “Performance-based design” Technical Committee in USA and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Organization for Earthquake Planning in Greece, responsible for Civil Protection from earthquakes. He is an Associate Editor for the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, a member of the Editorial Board of 4 journals (incl. Earthquake Spectra and Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering), Guest Assoc. Editor of 2, Outstanding Reviewer in 2 and Reviewer for 48 Journals. He serves as Research Grant evaluator in UK, EU (Horizon 2020), Canada, Switzerland, USA, China, Chile, Greece, Czech Republic, Poland, Cyprus and Slovenia.

His portfolio includes 65 papers in quality scientific journals, 5 books, 1 edited book, 19 book chapters, 100+ conference papers, magazine articles, interviews and earthquake investigation reports. He has been a Research Visitor at University California Berkeley (2007), a Fulbright Research Scholar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2012) and a High-End Expert in China (2016-2019). He is the recipient of 19 national and international awards for academic performance, teaching and research excellence.

Anastasios’s research contributions are in the areas of seismic design and assessment of bridges, dynamic soil-structure interaction, seismic risk of critical industrial facilities and pipelines, resilience of roadway and lifeline networks to natural hazards, selection of realistic earthquake ground motion scenarios and multiple-support excitation of extended structures, multi-resolution distributed simulations & hybrid testing, as well as system identification and structural health monitoring.
