UKCRIC Global Outlook webinar 7 - Transport as a key driver for economic growth and social development in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) The High Volume Transport (HVT) Applied Research Programme, a seven year Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) funded programme, came to a close on 30th January 2025. It leaves a legacy of an extensive repository of new research supporting the development of transport in LMICs that is greener, safer and more accessible, affordable and inclusive. A compendium has been published highlighting the 188 research reports and policy documents from more than 100 projects that together form the HVT body of research across themes including climate change, data, inclusion, informal transport, active mobility, infrastructure and access, road safety, crisis response, policy change and capacity building. Neil Ebenezer, the former Team Leader of the HVT Programme, will provide an overview of the research programme and discuss a selection of the research that the programme has delivered and discuss possible future funding opportunities. UKCRIC Global Outlook webinar 5 - "A global outlook on water and sanitation research" 10 Dec 2024 Behind the headline figures about how many people lack access to water and sanitation around the world is an intricate story of poor financing, weak institutions, limited water resources and 2 billion mothers who just want their children to be safe and healthy. Technology and infrastructure have a role to play but how can they best be implemented in these complex situations and what is the role for university research? In this talk Alison will draw on two case studies from her own research: sand dams, a methods of water harvesting wisely used in the rural drylands of Kenya, and container based sanitation, an easy-to-service toilet design that has the potential to solve some of the challenges of sanitation in dense informal settlements. |

Dr Shrimpton discusses her work in research as an infrastructure engineer working within the water-energy-food nexus. She discusses how social, environmental and justice considerations form a fundamental part of her work and guide both how the ‘problem’ is defined and the ‘solution options’ generated. She calls for an interdisciplinary mindset within engineering infrastructure and illustrates her approach with experiences working with drought prone small-scale farmers in Morocco, South Africa and Turkey, along with experiences researching new hydrogen production technologies and their potential impacts on indigenous communities in the US and Australia. |
