If you’re an early career researcher, chances are you’re already leading from the middle – even if no one’s called it that yet. You’re in that in-between space: not a student anymore, not (yet) a professor or PI. You’re expected to contribute to big-picture thinking, mentor junior colleagues, represent your team, and manage complex relationships with senior academics – all while progressing your own research and trying to secure your next career step. It’s a tough spot, and it can feel like you’re spinning plates while walking a tightrope. But the good news? You’re not alone – and there are skills you can develop to make this role not just manageable, but meaningful.
Leading from the middle means having influence – without always having authority. You’re not in charge of everything, but people still look to you for guidance, clarity, and support. In a research context, that might mean:
You’re a bridge – between your supervisor and junior staff or students, between strategy and implementation, between academic tradition and innovation. You could argue that it’s leadership, without the title.
This is why we’re hosting a special workshop to transform your leadership approach and make a meaningful impact in your research career.
This is a two part workshop, please ensure that you are able to attend both sessions.
Tuesday 24 June and Tuesday 1 July 2025, 09:15-13:00, Online via Zoom.
