Researchers from UKCRIC members Imperial College London and University of Leeds, together with the British Geological Survey have secured £2m of EPSRC funding to develop new low-carbon cements and concretes from locally abundant low-purity clay resources.
The project “Engineered UK clays for production of low-carbon cements” will leverage UKCRIC state-of-the-art facilities to deliver underpinning science and engineering to optimise the calcined clay cement technology, and produce practical, durable and sustainable concretes.
It will combine fieldwork with laboratory-based research, modelling, pilot-scale production, field trials, and public engagement, with heavy input from partner stakeholders from across the supply chain to ensure that the developed low-carbon materials are adopted as wide as possible in future infrastructure projects.
The project runs for four years from July 2022.
